Eaglesoft

Eaglesoft is dental practice management software from Patterson Dental, installed on a Windows server and workstations in the practice, for scheduling, clinical charting, treatment plans, billing, insurance claims, documents and digital imaging. It is aimed at US dental offices, and Patterson’s support site also documents Canadian setups with CDAnet claims through ITRANS. People looking for an Eaglesoft download are usually existing customers: the installers are provided by Patterson to licensed practices.

Eaglesoft is commercial software and there is no free version. Patterson offers a demo with a software specialist, so we list it as shareware (conditionally free).

How dental teams use it

Upgrade an existing office to 25.00

1. Check that the office is on Eaglesoft 16 or later; older versions cannot upgrade directly.
2. Make a current, valid backup of the Eaglesoft Data folder taken after the last posted transaction.
3. Confirm .NET Framework 4.8 on the server and every workstation, and install as a local administrator.
4. If you use Schick sensors, confirm they work with the IOSS driver, which replaced the discontinued CDR driver integration from 24.20.

Capture and review X-rays chairside

1. Connect the sensor to a workstation with enough powered USB ports (Patterson recommends Intel USB chipsets for Schick devices).
2. Acquire images into the patient’s record in Advanced Imaging.
3. Where Pearl is enabled, review AI annotations; since 25.00 they follow flips, mirrors and rotations, and edited images are re-sent to Pearl Second Opinion.

The measurement tool was removed from Advanced Imaging in version 24.00; Patterson points to Pearl Second Opinion for measurements.

Check the schedule away from the office

Sign up for Eaglesoft Mobile, then open it in a web browser on an iPhone, iPad or Android device to see the day’s schedule and patient details. It is mainly a view of practice data, but you can also assign tasks.

Install and first run

• Server (9 or fewer workstations): Intel i5 (8th gen or newer), 16 GB RAM, 1 TB RAID 1 storage, gigabit network. A dedicated server is recommended from 6 workstations; Windows Server edition and a Xeon CPU from 10.
• Workstations: Windows 11 Professional, Intel i5 (8th gen or newer), 8 GB RAM, TPM 2.0.
• Not supported: any Windows Home edition, virtual machines for any Patterson software, and installing the Eaglesoft server on a domain controller.
• Licensing: single-user licences are not supported from version 22; a multi-user licence is needed.
• Internet: recommended for support, updates and eServices, but Patterson states Eaglesoft does not need it to function.
• Multiple locations: running several offices on one Eaglesoft database over a wide area network is not supported; Patterson asks such practices to contact its specialists.

Limitations

• No free version and no self-service trial; you see it through a Patterson demo.
• Windows-only, on-premises software: you maintain the server, backups and security.
• No macOS client and no virtual machine support.
• Eaglesoft Mobile is a companion view, not a full mobile practice system.
• Upgrades need planning: minimum source version, .NET, sensor drivers and a verified backup all have to line up.

Eaglesoft vs alternatives

Dentrix is the closest match: another installed Windows system with a big vendor behind it, plus a free Learning Edition for students, which Eaglesoft lacks. Open Dental is also Windows-based and offers a free trial with a demo database you can install yourself. If you would rather not run a server, look at cloud systems such as Curve Dental or Denticon; Canadian offices can also compare ClearDent.
