Smilecloud

Smilecloud

Smilecloud is a cloud platform for digital smile design, before-and-after video simulation and dentist-lab collaboration, in the browser and apps for Mac, Windows, iOS and Android. Shareware: full-featured free trial without a card, then a paid plan.

Shareware (conditionally free)Latest version: 1.198.5Commercial · free trial

Smilecloud is a cloud platform for digital smile design and case collaboration, made by Smilecloud SRL for dentists, dental technicians and multi-clinic groups. It turns a patient portrait into a facially aligned smile design, produces before-and-after video simulations for case presentation, and keeps photos, scans, CBCT files and team chat in one shared case. People searching for a Smilecloud download usually want the desktop or mobile app, but the core product works in a web browser. It is a paid platform with a free, full-featured trial and no free plan, so it is shareware (conditionally free).

Smilecloud is a design and communication tool, not a CAD/CAM program: according to its own FAQ, you cannot export printable or millable models or restorations. What you can do is export the designed teeth as STL files to use as a patient-specific library in exocad, or order work from third-party digital labs linked to the platform. Straumann presents Smilecloud on its website, and the platform integrates with Straumann AXS.

What it does

  • Biometric smile design – AI-assisted design from a single portrait, aligned to facial reference points, using biometric tooth libraries; also available on phones since June 2026.
  • Portrait enhancement – corrects exposure and colour casts and replaces a cluttered background while keeping facial and dental features.
  • Before-and-after video simulation – photorealistic videos of the proposed smile for patient presentations; the number per month depends on the plan.
  • Signature Design – import your own digital wax-up, scanned model or custom setup and show it on the patient’s face (Business plan).
  • 3D review and CBCT – convert DICOM CBCT to 3D, make cross-sections, measure in 3D and align CBCT with intraoral scans; review Modjaw motion data (Business plan and trial).
  • Blueprint – extends the smile design into 3D with scan data, CBCT and motion, including generated patient-specific jaw motion (Biometric Motion). Only offered in listed countries; see Limitations.
  • Collaboration – case-based cloud storage, team chat, 2D and 3D annotations, time-limited share links, and a Patient Passport for secure file sharing and chat with patients.
  • Integrations – Straumann AXS, Dropbox and Google cloud storage; independent lab services (Metalab) can be ordered from inside a case.

How dental teams use it

Present a smile makeover from one photo

  1. Create a case and upload a frontal smiling portrait (or take it with the mobile app).
  2. Run Portrait Enhancement, then start a smile design; the tooth library is positioned from facial reference points.
  3. Adjust tooth shape and position to your aesthetic plan and lock the design.
  4. Generate a before-and-after video and show or share it with the patient.

Hand a design to the lab for exocad

  1. In the finished smile design, click Export and choose “Separate Files”; you get a ZIP with STL models of the designed teeth.
  2. Extract the ZIP, then in exocad create the order, import the upper and lower scans and place a generic library tooth first.
  3. Replace it with the Smilecloud library files, following Smilecloud’s step-by-step guide, and continue the design in exocad.

Check a case against CBCT

  1. Unzip the CBCT export and drag all .dcm files into the case’s Documentation (they preview there in 2D only).
  2. Open Projects > Review, choose the CBCT file, set the density and add it to the scene.
  3. Double-click to create cross-sections, measure distances and align the volume with the intraoral scans.

Install and first run

  • Sign up on smilecloud.com with an email address, or with a Google, Apple or Straumann account, and start the trial; no card is needed.
  • Accept the required consent forms (acceptable use and health-data consent), then enter team name, practice location and language.
  • Everyday work – cases, uploads, smile design and video simulation – runs in Chrome, Edge or Opera on an ordinary laptop with a stable internet connection.
  • Blueprint 3D design needs more power: Apple M1 or newer, or on Windows a Snapdragon X Elite/X Plus, Intel Core i7 12th generation or AMD Ryzen 7 6000 series or newer.
  • Desktop apps for Mac and Windows and mobile apps for iOS and Android are listed on the official download page.
  • Use high-quality, evenly lit portraits; simulation quality depends heavily on the photo.

Limitations

  • No free plan: after the trial, every plan is paid, and smile design is not included in the entry-level Lite plan.
  • Blueprint and Biometric Motion are only offered in listed countries (mostly EU and EEA countries, Japan and Türkiye); the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia are not on the current list.
  • No export of printable or millable models or restorations; production goes through your own CAD software or partner labs.
  • Cloud-only storage of patient data: check that this fits your data-protection obligations. Smilecloud states it is ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certified.
  • Requires a constant internet connection.

Smilecloud vs alternatives

Smile design is also built into dental CAD suites, such as exocad’s smile design module, which work locally and lead straight into restoration design; Smilecloud’s strengths are its browser access, video simulations and case collaboration between clinic and lab. For free tools around the same workflow, Meshmixer (no longer developed) can view and edit exported STL files, and a DICOM viewer such as MicroDicom opens CBCT files, but neither does smile design. For general mechanical design around a case, such as model holders or lab jigs, see Autodesk Fusion.

FAQ

Is Smilecloud free?

No. There is a free trial of the full-featured Business plan without a credit card, after which a paid plan is required.

Is there a Smilecloud download for Mac or Windows?

Yes, the official download page lists desktop apps for Mac and Windows, but you can also work entirely in Chrome, Edge or Opera.

Does Smilecloud work on iPad and phones?

Yes. There are iOS and Android apps, and since June 2026 smile designs can be created and edited on mobile phones.

Smilecloud vs exocad: what is the difference?

Smilecloud is for designing and presenting the smile and sharing the case; exocad is dental CAD for designing restorations. Smilecloud exports designed teeth as STL for use as a library in exocad.

Can I print models from Smilecloud?

Not directly. Smilecloud does not export printable or millable models; you can order them through integrated third-party labs or finish the design in your CAD software.

How do I use Smilecloud with Straumann?

You can sign in with a Straumann account and connect Straumann AXS to exchange case files.

Is Blueprint available in the US or UK?

Not at the moment. Blueprint is currently listed for many EU and EEA countries, Japan and Türkiye.
