Jivex DICOM Viewer

JiveX DICOM Viewer (Personal Edition)

The JiveX DICOM Viewer from VISUS opens DICOM images from CDs, USB sticks and folders on Windows 10/11 (64-bit). Without a key it runs as the Personal Edition: free for non-commercial use, limited and time-limited. Shareware (conditionally free); not for reading or therapy planning.

Shareware (conditionally free)Latest version: 5.8Personal Edition · not for diagnosis

The JiveX DICOM Viewer is a Windows program from the German PACS vendor VISUS Health IT for viewing DICOM images outside the clinical reading workflow, for example for research, teaching or checking a patient CD. Without a licence key it runs as the “Personal Edition”, which VISUS offers free of charge for non-commercial use. If you are searching for a JiveX DICOM Viewer download, note that there is no product called “Jivex Free Edition”: the real name is JiveX, and the no-cost mode is the Personal Edition.

The Personal Edition is limited in functions and can be used only up to a time limit; a licence key bought from VISUS unlocks the full viewer. We therefore list it as shareware (conditionally free). The user manual is explicit that this application may not be used for reading or for therapy planning, so in a dental setting it is a review tool, not a diagnostic or planning tool.

Best forReviewing DICOM images from CDs, USB sticks or folders on a Windows PC for education, research or case discussion

What it does

  • Loads DICOM images from the hard disk, a network share, CD, DVD or USB stick, including whole folders with subfolders and drag and drop from Explorer.
  • A “Mail Viewer” button that searches the PC’s drives for inserted media and loads the DICOM images found there.
  • Comparison layouts, linked series, synchronised scrolling, cutlines and a 3D position cursor for finding the same spot in different series.
  • Distance, angle and area/statistics measurements, curved length, calibration against an object of known size, and annotations.
  • Export of images, series or studies to JPEG, BMP, TIFF or PNG; copy to clipboard; printing.
  • Cine playback for multiframe images.
  • Display of non-image DICOM objects such as ECGs and encapsulated PDF documents.
  • Interface in English, German and French.

How dental teams use it

Look at images a patient brings from hospital

  1. Insert the patient’s CD or USB stick and click the Mail Viewer button, or use File > Open and select the folder with “Include sub-folders” ticked.
  2. Pick the CT or CBCT series from the preview panel; the number of slices is shown on the thumbnail.
  3. Scroll with the arrow keys rather than a fast mouse wheel: the manual warns that fast wheel scrolling can skip images, while arrow keys show every slice.
  4. Add a distance measurement or annotation if you need to point something out during a discussion with the referring clinician.

Compare two studies

  1. Load both studies, set a 2×1 matrix and drag each series into a viewing section.
  2. Link the sections with the chain icon so zoom and scrolling stay in step.

Prepare teaching material

Export selected images to PNG or JPEG for lecture slides or a study club presentation. Remove identifying information from slides yourself, and keep in mind that the Personal Edition is for non-commercial purposes only.

Install and first run

  • Requirements: a standard desktop PC with an up-to-date CPU, Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) and a monitor of at least 1280 x 1024 pixels.
  • Install: run the setup file, accept the licence conditions and follow the assistant. The manual states that User Account Control (UAC) must be switched off for installation; in a clinic, ask your IT support before changing this and turn it back on afterwards if your policy requires it.
  • First start: confirm the dialog with legal notes and licence notices. Without an imported key, the viewer starts as the Personal Edition.
  • Licence key: import a purchased key once via Help > Registry key import to enable full functions.
  • macOS and Linux: not available.

Limitations

  • May not be used for reading or therapy planning; not a tool for implant planning or diagnosis.
  • Personal Edition: reduced functions, time-limited, non-commercial use only, no technical service.
  • Cannot connect to a PACS, and hanging protocols are not available.
  • Windows 10/11 64-bit only; no Mac version.
  • No dental-specific tools such as panoramic reconstruction or implant libraries.

JiveX DICOM Viewer vs alternatives

MicroDicom is the closest Windows alternative: free for non-commercial use, with a portable edition, anonymisation and, since 2026, 3D MPR. On a Mac, OsiriX Lite is the usual starting point. For open-source 3D work with CBCT, including threshold segmentation and STL export, see 3DimViewer or MITK.

FAQ

Is the JiveX DICOM Viewer free?

VISUS offers it free of charge for non-commercial use as the Personal Edition, which is limited in functions and time-limited. Full use needs a purchased licence key, so we class it as shareware (conditionally free).

No. VISUS lists only Windows 10 and Windows 11, 64-bit. Mac users can look at OsiriX Lite instead.

What is the JiveX DICOM CD Viewer?

It is a variant that JiveX systems burn onto CDs or DVDs together with the images. It starts from the disc without installation and already contains a licence key.

Is there a portable JiveX DICOM Viewer?

The downloadable viewer is an installer. Only the CD Viewer, which is burned onto discs by JiveX systems, runs from the medium without installation.

Can I use the JiveX DICOM Viewer for diagnosis or implant planning?

No. The user manual states that the application may not be used for reading or for therapy planning.

How to install the JiveX DICOM Viewer?
