Autodesk Meshmixer is a free Windows program for editing triangle meshes (STL, OBJ, PLY), and in dentistry it is the tool many labs and practices reach for when an intraoral or model scan has to be cleaned, based and made printable. People searching for “Meshmixer dental” or “Meshmixer dental download” usually want exactly that: a no-cost way to trim a scan, close holes, add a flat base and export a watertight STL for the printer.
Be aware of its status before you build a workflow around it. Autodesk stopped developing Meshmixer after version 3.5 (2018). The official Autodesk listing still offers it free, but states that the tool is no longer in development and will not be supported, and points users to Autodesk Fusion. There is no dental edition or dental module; everything dental is done with its general mesh tools.

| Best for | Cleaning and preparing dental scans (STL) for 3D printing; quick mesh repair and measurement |
What it does
- Selects regions of a mesh by brush or surface lasso, then deletes, smooths, extrudes or offsets them.
- Cuts meshes with a plane, mirrors them and combines parts with Boolean union, difference and intersection.
- Finds holes, non-manifold edges and small disconnected pieces with the Inspector and repairs them automatically.
- Converts an open scan surface into a closed solid (“Make Solid”) suitable for printing.
- Hollows a solid to a set wall thickness and adds escape (drain) holes.
- Reduces, remeshes and smooths meshes to shrink large scan files.
- Measures distances and analyses wall thickness and print stability.
- Generates branching support structures and optimises print orientation for desktop printers.
How dental teams use it
Turn an intraoral scan into a printable model
- Import the arch STL exported from the scanner software (File > Import).
- Use Edit > Plane Cut or Select with the brush to remove the ragged scan edge, then press Delete.
- Select all, apply Select > Modify > Smooth Boundary, then Select > Edit > Extrude with a Flat end type to build a base.
- Run Analysis > Inspector to fill remaining holes, then export as binary STL for your slicer.
This is the same sequence Formlabs documents in its guide to making models from intraoral scans.
Hollow a model to save resin
- Make sure the model is a closed solid (Edit > Make Solid if needed).
- Use Edit > Hollow, set the wall thickness and add escape holes on the base.
- Check the result with Analysis > Thickness before exporting.
Repair and lighten STL files from CBCT segmentation
Surface models exported from segmentation tools such as 3DimViewer or SlicerCMF are often very dense and full of small artefacts. In Meshmixer, use Analysis > Inspector to remove floating fragments, select all and use Select > Edit > Reduce to cut the triangle count, and Select > Deform > Smooth for rough areas, then export the cleaned STL.
Quick checks before printing
Use Analysis > Measure for point-to-point distances and Analysis > Stability or Thickness to spot thin areas that may fail in the printer. These are print-preparation checks, not clinical measurements.
Install and first run
- Windows: the Autodesk listing offers one 64-bit installer (Autodesk_Meshmixer_v3p5_Win64.exe). Run it, untick “Associate STL files with Meshmixer” if you do not want that, keep or change the default folder C:Program FilesAutodeskMeshmixer, and click Accept & Install. No Autodesk account or licence key is involved.
- macOS: Autodesk no longer offers a Mac installer. Mac users are better served by a maintained alternative (see below).
- Linux: there has never been a Linux build.
- Uninstall: Windows Settings > Apps (Add or Remove Programs), search for Meshmixer, Uninstall.
Gotchas: Meshmixer works in its own units, so check that a scan imports at the right scale before measuring. Very large scans slow it down; reduce the mesh first. Save work often, as the program is no longer patched. Download it only from Autodesk – several look-alike “Meshmixer” websites are not run by Autodesk.
Limitations
- Discontinued: no bug fixes, no security updates and no official support from Autodesk.
- No dental functions: no margin lines, no die trimming, no tooth library, no model base templates and no automatic articulation.
- Not a medical device and not validated for clinical measurements or appliance design.
- Windows only in its current official form.
- Large or badly broken meshes can make it slow or unstable.
Meshmixer vs alternatives
Autodesk itself recommends Fusion, which now includes many mesh tools, but it is a commercial CAD product rather than a free replacement. Among free tools, MeshLab (open source, Windows/macOS/Linux) covers mesh cleaning, simplification and measurement with a more technical interface, and Blender can do almost anything with meshes but takes longer to learn. If your starting point is CBCT rather than a surface scan, create the STL in 3DimViewer or SlicerCMF and use Meshmixer only for the final clean-up. For capturing a physical cast with a consumer depth sensor, Skanect was the classic companion, though it is also being phased out.
FAQ
Is Meshmixer free?
Yes. Autodesk lists Meshmixer as free on its Marketplace. It is proprietary freeware, not open source.
Is Meshmixer still available and supported?
It is still available from Autodesk, but Autodesk states it is no longer in development and will not be supported. The last release is 3.5 from 2018.
Is there a Meshmixer download for Mac?
Not from Autodesk any more; the current official listing offers only a Windows 64-bit installer. On a Mac, use a maintained tool such as MeshLab or Blender.
Does Meshmixer run on Linux?
No. Autodesk never released a Linux version.
Can I use Meshmixer for dental models?
Yes, for model preparation: trimming scans, adding a base, filling holes, hollowing and exporting STL for printing. It has no dental-specific tools and is not validated for clinical design work.
Meshmixer vs Blender for 3D printing: which is better?
Meshmixer is faster to learn for cut, base, repair and hollow tasks. Blender is maintained and far more capable, but takes longer to learn for the same jobs.
What is the best Meshmixer alternative?
Autodesk points users to Fusion. Free options are MeshLab for mesh repair and Blender for general editing; for CBCT-to-STL work use 3DimViewer or SlicerCMF.
