Zygote Body is a 3D human anatomy viewer that runs in a web browser, made by Zygote Media Group, a Utah company that has produced 3D anatomy models since 1994. It is aimed at students, teachers and anyone who wants to peel back the layers of the body without installing software; it began as Google Body and has been run by Zygote as ZygoteBody since 2012. There is no Zygote Body download: the free level opens straight in the browser. Paid Premium and Professional levels add content and tools, so we list it as shareware (conditionally free).
For dental students the free adult models are useful because the model data includes the mandible, 32 individual teeth, the masseter and the alveolar nerves and vessels, so you can see the jaws and dentition in the context of the whole head. The detailed articulating skull is a Premium model. Zygote Body has no dental edition and no tooth-level morphology, imaging or planning tools.

What it does
- Male and female adult models – complete anatomy with systems, available on the free Lite level.
- Layer slider – an opacity slider reveals internal anatomy layer by layer, or system by system, from skin to skeleton.
- Search and select – click any structure to see its name, or search by name; a reference link gives more information.
- Hide and isolate – Ctrl-click (Cmd-click on Mac) hides structures; the visibility tool keeps them hidden until you unhide all.
- Extra models – dissected heart views, eye and orbit, an articulating skull and an ear cross-section; several of these are Premium content.
- Premium tools – full 3D orbit and panning, pins, annotations, saved scenes, slicing in the X, Y and Z planes, an exploded view and self-generated quizzes.
- Professional tools – snapshots of the scene that can be drawn on and saved as images, subject to the licence terms.
- Embedding – the viewer offers an embed option for web pages.
How dental teams use it
Show the jaws and dentition in context
- Open zygotebody.com and choose the adult male or female model.
- Drag the layer slider down until skin, fat and superficial muscles fade and the skull is visible.
- Search for “mandible” or click the teeth to see their labels, then hide the maxilla or neighbouring structures to isolate the lower jaw.
Trace the masseter and alveolar nerves
- With the muscle layer visible, search for the masseter and select both parts.
- Move the slider to reveal deeper layers and find the alveolar nerves and vessels near the jaws.
- On Premium, pin the structures and save the scene for later revision.
Use the articulating skull (Premium)
The high-resolution articulating skull is a Premium model. With the orbit mode and slicing tools you can look at individual skull bones and the temporomandibular area from any angle, and save annotated scenes for teaching.
Install and first run
- Nothing to install: open zygotebody.com in an up-to-date desktop browser. The page uses WebGL, so hardware graphics acceleration must be switched on.
- Mouse controls: click and drag to rotate, scroll to zoom. The Home button resets the view.
- Full 3D rotation (Orbit mode) and panning with Ctrl are Premium features; the free level uses the simpler capsule rotation.
- The free Lite level is supported by adverts.
- For saved scenes, sign up for an account and choose Premium; paid access can be cancelled from your account profile.
- Older or low-power computers may load the full-body models slowly.
Limitations
- Free level has fewer tools: no saving, no slicing, no annotations and limited rotation.
- No dental morphology: teeth are part of the general model, without surfaces, cusps or cross-sections.
- No offline use and no official desktop app.
- No public changelog or version numbers, and parts of the account pages still show copyright dates from 2014–2017.
- Educational only; it does not open patient images.
Zygote Body vs alternatives
BioDigital Human also runs in the browser and has a free Personal plan with more structures and quizzes, but only 10 model views a month. Complete Anatomy and Visible Body are paid apps with much deeper study tools; Visible Body sells a 3D Dental Anatomy add-on. e-Anatomy has free illustrated teeth and TMJ MRI modules.
