Autodesk Fusion (formerly Fusion 360) is a cloud-connected CAD, CAM, simulation and electronics design program from Autodesk for engineers, product designers, makers and students. In a dental setting it is a general engineering tool, not dental CAD: labs and clinics use it to design jigs, fixtures, model holders and other lab tools, and to repair and adapt STL meshes from scanners before 3D printing. An Autodesk Fusion download is free for eligible personal (hobby) use and for students and educators, while commercial use needs a paid licence with a free trial, so we list it as shareware (conditionally free).
This matters for dental teams: the free personal-use licence is limited to home-based, non-commercial projects by individuals generating less than USD 1,000 a year, and it excludes use in primary employment or company environments. A dental practice or laboratory therefore needs the paid version; the free route only fits students, teachers and genuinely private projects.

What it does
- Parametric solid modelling – sketch-based features with a timeline, so dimensions can be changed later and the model updates.
- Mesh import – Insert Mesh brings STL, OBJ or 3MF files into a design, with a choice of units and position (centre, move to ground).
- Mesh repair – the Repair tool closes holes, stitches triangles, fixes flipped and degenerate faces, or wraps and rebuilds a damaged mesh.
- Mesh to solid – convert a mesh body to a solid or surface body, or reverse-engineer it from section sketches (Create Mesh Section Sketch and Fit Curves to Mesh Section).
- Export for printing – save bodies as 3MF, STL (binary or ASCII) or OBJ; solids also export to STEP, IGES, SAT, SMP and FBX, and sketches to DXF.
- CAM and simulation – toolpaths for CNC machining, additive preparation and engineering simulation (limited or paid add-ons depending on licence).
- Cloud data management – designs are stored in Autodesk’s cloud with version history and sharing.
How dental teams use it
Design a holder or jig for the lab
- Measure the object it must hold (for example a scanned stone model, a crucible or a handpiece) and sketch the base profile with exact dimensions.
- Extrude, add fillets and clearances for your printer, and use parameters so the same design can be resized.
- Export as 3MF or STL and slice it in your printer’s software.
Repair an STL from a scanner before printing
- In the Design workspace, open the Mesh tab and choose Create > Insert Mesh; select the STL and set the unit to millimetres.
- Choose Prepare > Repair and start with Close Holes or Stitch and Remove; use Wrap or Rebuild only if needed, as they destroy inner structures.
- Save the result as a mesh (3MF or STL).
Build a fixture around a scanned model
- Insert the model scan as a mesh and create a mesh section sketch through it to capture its outline.
- Fit curves to the section and use them to model a nest, base or clamp as a solid body.
- For simple shapes you can convert the mesh to a solid, but dense scans are heavy; generating face groups first gives cleaner results.
Restorations, surgical guides and aligners are designed in dedicated dental CAD software; Fusion has no dental libraries or dental workflows.
Install and first run
- Windows: Windows 11 23H2 (build 22631) or newer; x86-64 processor (minimum Core i3/Ryzen 3 class), 8 GB RAM (32 GB recommended), DirectX 11 graphics with at least 1 GB. The Media Feature Pack must be installed first on Windows editions that lack it.
- Mac: macOS 14 Sonoma minimum (15.7 or newer recommended), Apple M1 or a 1.4 GHz dual-core Intel Core i5, 4 GB RAM (16 GB recommended), 8.5 GB of storage. From September 2026 Metal is the default graphics driver on macOS.
- Sign in with an Autodesk account and choose the licence type: Personal Use, Education (requires eligibility verification) or trial of the paid version.
- An internet connection is needed because designs are stored in the cloud.
- Keep Fusion updated: the September 2026 release is not backward compatible with previous builds for shared data.
- Personal Use accounts are limited to 10 editable documents at a time, so plan which designs you keep editable.
Limitations
- The free Personal Use licence is non-commercial only: not for clinics, labs or any employer.
- Personal Use has limited CAM, electronics and drawings, single-user data management, limited import/export file types and forum-only support.
- No Linux version; recent Windows 11 or macOS 14 is required.
- Cloud storage of design files; do not put identifiable patient data in file names or designs.
- Dense intraoral or model scans can be slow to convert to solids.
- Not a medical device design system: it gives no dental-specific validation for appliances used in patients.
Autodesk Fusion vs alternatives
Meshmixer is simpler and free for mesh editing, but Autodesk no longer develops it. FreeCAD is free and open source with parametric modelling but a steeper learning curve, and Blender is free for mesh sculpting rather than precise engineering. To create STL files from CBCT before designing around them, use a segmentation tool such as SlicerCMF (3D Slicer) or MITK.
FAQ
Is Autodesk Fusion free?
It is free for personal, non-commercial hobby use and for eligible students and educators. Commercial use, including in a dental practice or lab, needs a paid licence; a free trial is available.
What are the limitations of Fusion for personal use?
Autodesk lists limited CAM, limited electronics and 2D drawings, single-user data management, limited import/export file types, forum support only and 10 editable documents at a time.
Can I download Autodesk Fusion for Mac?
Yes. Fusion runs on macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple silicon or supported Intel Macs.
Is there Autodesk Fusion for Linux?
No. Supported platforms are Windows and macOS, plus access in a web browser.
Is Fusion free for startups?
No. Autodesk runs a startup programme for qualifying companies, but it is a paid, discounted licence rather than a free one.
How do I convert an STL mesh to a solid in Fusion?
Insert the STL with Insert Mesh, repair it if needed, then use the Convert Mesh tool to create a solid or surface body. For dense scans, work from mesh section sketches instead.
Fusion vs FreeCAD: which is better for a dental lab?
Many users find Fusion easier to learn, and it has strong mesh tools, but needs a paid licence for lab work. FreeCAD is free for any use, including commercial, but has a steeper learning curve.
