Shareware (conditionally free)Free Freemium edition · Cloud and Local Plus commercial

ABELDent is dental practice management software from ABELSoft for dental offices that want scheduling, charting, billing, imaging and patient communication in one system. It is one of the few practice management products that offers a permanent free edition, so an “ABELDent download” is a real option for a small office or a training environment, not only a sales demo.

This page explains the three ABELDent products, what the free edition (ABELDent Freemium) includes and what it does not, and how it compares with other practice management systems. ABELDent is commercial software: the free edition is the conditionally free entry point, which is why we list it as shareware (conditionally free).

What it does

  • Appointment scheduling, with automated reminders, confirmations and follow-ups in the editions that include the communication system.
  • Patient records, clinical charting and treatment planning.
  • Billing, insurance and financial tracking for the practice.
  • Digital radiograph capture through TWAIN, so common sensors and imaging devices can feed images into the patient record.
  • Reporting and analytics dashboards, available as an add-on (Reporting and Analytics).
  • Online review management, available as an add-on (Reputation Management Service).
  • Remote backup and recovery, available as an optional service, plus encrypted cloud data in the Cloud edition.
  • AI features advertised by the vendor: ABELDent Scribe, which turns a provider-patient conversation into clinical notes, and AI Radiograph Analysis, which flags potential conditions in dental images. Treat these as decision support and check how they are licensed with the vendor.

How dental teams use it

Try a practice management system without a purchase

ABELDent Freemium is described by the vendor as looking and feeling identical to the premium product. A practice can install it, enter a few test patients, build a schedule and run through a normal day before deciding on a paid edition.

  1. Install Freemium on a test computer, not on a machine that already runs a working copy of ABELDent.
  2. Create providers, operatories and a handful of dummy patients.
  3. Book appointments, chart treatment and post a sample charge.
  4. Connect a sensor through TWAIN if you want to test imaging.

Run a small office on the free edition

The vendor says Freemium can be used to try the software or to get started in a production environment. Live data stays on a local server in the practice, and the vendor states the only constraint is the performance of the free Microsoft database it uses. Support, one-on-one training, ongoing updates and data migration are not part of the free edition and are chargeable.

Train staff

The free edition includes access to the ABELDent learning management system for 90 days, renewable month to month while it is in use. That makes Freemium a practical sandbox for front-desk and hygiene training.

Move to a larger edition

When the practice outgrows the free database, ABELDent Local Plus gives higher performance on a local server, and ABELDent Cloud stores data on Microsoft Azure and supports several locations. The vendor says both share the Freemium interface, so staff do not relearn the screens.

Install and first run

  1. Open the ABELDent free dental software page on the official site and use the Freemium download button. No credit card is required.
  2. Check the System Requirements page on abeldent.com before installing; it is not repeated on the download page.
  3. Install on a dedicated computer or server that does not already host an ABELDent database.
  4. Set up the practice, providers and fee schedule, then import or enter patients.
  5. For production use, plan a backup routine first. The Remote Backup and Recovery service is optional.

Limitations

  • The Patient Communication System (automated reminders and messaging) is not available in Freemium.
  • Telephone support, one-on-one training, updates and data migration are chargeable; the free edition is not a managed service.
  • The free edition runs on a free Microsoft database, so very large practices will reach its limits.
  • The official site does not publish a version number or release date, so we cannot state one here.
  • This is commercial software. We list no prices; request current terms from ABELSoft.
  • Regulatory status of the AI features is not stated on the pages we reviewed, so confirm it with the vendor before relying on them clinically.

ABELDent vs alternatives

Most large practice management systems are sold on a demo-only basis. A permanent free edition is what sets ABELDent apart.
